LAS RAMBLAS PROJECT - Palisades parents and guardians have an opportunity to share their views publicly and in writing on how funds from the Las Ramblas Project in San Juan Capistrano at Camino Las Ramblas and Avenida California could fund significant repairs and upgrades at Palisades School, such as permanent air conditioning. If approved, CUSD staff would be able to turn the Las Ramblas property over to a developer and use the proceeds to invest in our local schools, including Palisades. There has been significant community engagement to gain buy-in from the neighborhood of this property. Click here to review the Las Ramblas Project Report.

FACILITIES CONDITION ASSESSMENT - A Facilities Condition Assessment was recently completed for Palisades and the report showed that our school currently needs several million dollars just to address safety, deterioration, and infrastructure. Click here to review the report.

HOW TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT - Palisades parents and guardians can show their support for the Las Ramblas Project and having potential funds go to Palisades School by e-mailing or sending letters to the San Juan Capistrano City Council (32400 Paseo Adelanto, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675) and/or by attending the next San Juan Capistrano City Council Meeting on Tuesday, February 6th at 5:00 p.m. at 32400 Paseo Adelanto in San Juan Capistrano. There’s power in numbers and having at least 30 Palisades parents and guardians in attendance at the San Juan Capistrano City Council Meeting on February 6th will have a big impact! Principal Curt Visca, PTA President Christine Blanchard, and other parents plan to speak at the San Juan Capistrano City Council Meeting on February 6th. No need to speak, just show up and show your Wave support at the San Juan Capistrano City Council Meeting!

SAMPLE LETTERS & E-MAILS - Click on the links (Sample #1, Sample #2, Sample #3) for sample letters and e-mails that you can send to the San Juan Capistrano City Council.

THANK YOU! Thank you in advance for your assistance and support!

Below are traffic and safety reminders if you drop off your child before school and/or pick up your child after school.

Avoid double parking or stopping in the middle of the street to drop off and/or pick up, especially on Via Gomez since this street tends to have heavy traffic before and after school due to the crosswalk at the corner of Via Gomez and Via Sacramento.

If you tend to use Via Gomez for drop off and/or pick up, please use other streets whenever possible before and after school, such as Via Espinoza, Via San Juan, and Via Sacramento.

Only park in designated areas along the side streets around Palisades School and respect our neighbors by not blocking driveways in the neighborhood.

Vehicles that are stopped or parked illegally may be ticketed by law enforcement.

Thank you for your cooperation.

In a recent Orange County Register newspaper article titled "75 Best Places to Eat," Brick was listed as the 8th best restaurant in Orange County.

"The pizzas are outstanding, made the old-fashioned way in a wood-fired oven. The Caesar is the best you’ll find for miles. To get a better sense of what Brick is all about, order the chitarra spaghetti carbonara. The pasta is rolled into sheets and cut into fine, square-edged strands, which are then tossed with slow-cooked pork that’s been braised in its own fat until it falls apart at the touch of a fork," states Orange County Register restaurant critic Brad A. Johnson.

Most schools have a non-profit Foundation that works in unison with the PTA, School Site Council, and other site organizations. Palisades does not have a Foundation. If Palisades had a Foundation, such as the “Palisades Wave Foundation,” additional events and activities could be organized to raise funds to support the students at Palisades, such as an off-site “adults only” Casino Night to raise funds for 5th grade Science Camp or technology.

Below are various links on how to begin the process of formatting a Foundation at Palisades. This process must go through parents/guardians that are interested and willing to take the time to apply with the State to have a Foundation at Palisades.

Palisades PTA News: We wanted to clarify the funding situation for 2017-18 Science Camp. Many Palisades families, community members and businesses have made donations and have committed to donate funds to help fund Science Camp for the 2017-18 school year. However, several thousand dollars still need to be actually donated to fully fund Science Camp, which is approximatley $300 per 5th grade student. There will continue to be ongoing fundraisers for Science Camp, such as after school popsicle sales on Fridays and food sales during events such as Trunk or Treat. The Palisades PTA will continue to take donations from Palisades families, community members and businesses during the school year. Thank you for your continued support for 5th grade Science Camp!

All CUSD sites have staff meetings, professional development, grade level meetings, etc. on ACE days, which are on Tuesdays, Wednesday, or Thursdays. Palisades and other schools in our area are assigned to Tuesdays for ACE.

Below is information about 5th grade Science Camp to keep all Palisades families informed of the funding process. Science Camp information was also discussed during the Palisades PTA meeting on August 28th. The “take away” from this email is that it is more and more difficult to raise funds each school year for 5th grade Science Camp due to the large amount of funding that is needed and number of parent and community volunteers required to raise funds. (All photos are of Palisades students learning at Science Camp!)

Photo: Rock Wall

WHAT IS SCIENCE CAMP?

It has been a tradition at Palisades School and many other CUSD schools to send their 5th graders to Science Camp each year. Over the years, Palisades 5th grade students have gone to Science Camp at Thousand Pines near the city of Crestline in the mountains for four days and three nights. Students do a variety of hands-on science activities with the Science Camp staff. The 5th grade teachers also attend and participate. Students really enjoy going to Science Camp. Pending sufficient funding, the dates of Science Camp for the 2017-18 school year are from Tuesday, March 20th to Friday, March 23rd.

Photo: Low Ropes

HOW MUCH DOES SCIENCE CAMP COST?
The cost to send each student to Science Camp is approximately $300. This amount covers the cost of everything, such as bus transportation, lodging, food, and activities at Thousand Pines. The PTA also funds $25 per student. The overall cost to fund all 5th graders is approximately $30,000 each school year. Click here to review a Science Camp flyer that is posted on the school’s website under PTA News.

Photo: Rock Samples

HOW IS SCIENCE CAMP FUNDED?

Funding mainly comes from families of 5th graders and fundraisers during the school year, such as 5th grade parents selling food during PTA Family Fun Nights. Fundraising for current 5th graders started during the 2016-17 school year and continues during the 2017-18 school year. All donations are voluntary since public education is to be free for all students, whether or not a family can or chooses to voluntarily donate funds.

Photo: Snow

WHAT IF WE DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH FUNDING?

The guidelines for funding has changed over the years. Currently, all funds need to be raised before the deadline, which is approximately 6 months before Science Camp each year. If not, the PTA is liable for any remaining funds for Science Camp that have not been raised. A commitment of at least 85% of funding is needed by Friday, September 8th or Science Camp may be cancelled. Thus far, only about 8% of families with a 5th grader have committed to voluntarily fund Science Camp.

HOW CAN I MAKE A DONATION?

If you have a preschool through 4th grade child, or a child that has yet to attend Palisades or has moved on to middle or high school, you can make a donation! Need ideas? “Adopt” a family with a 5th grader for $300 (PTA volunteers will work with families), or donate any amount from $1 to $1,000! Make checks payable to “Palisades PTA” and write “5th Grade Science Camp” on the memo line. Large corporate/business donations are also welcome and will be recognized by the Palisades PTA in emails and on the PTA website. Click here to become a Palisades PTA sponsor, where donations range from $150 to over $750!

PBIS OVERVIEW - The Palisades staff is implementing a nationwide student behavior program during the 2017-18 school year called Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), which is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional and academic success. Principal Curt Visca, several teachers, and the School Counselor attended PBIS trainings at the district during the 2016-17 school year and worked on a PBIS plan for Palisades School. PBIS updates were also shared during staff and School Site Council meetings.

WAVES TO SUCCESS! - The goal of every staff member is to help students achieve the Waves to Success each school day. The Waves to Success are being Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Learn. Principal Curt Visca reviewed the PBIS program with students today and teachers will be reviewing PBIS behavior standards in the classroom, lunch area, walkways, playground, restrooms, and bus area during the first week of school and throughout the school year. Click here review the Waves to Success! chart that will be posted throughout Palisades during the school year.

WAVE TICKETS - Students observed doing a great job during the school day by a staff member may receive Wave Tickets. Students will be able to redeem their Wave Tickets on Fridays during recess for prizes such as pencils, books, and special privileges, such as eating lunch with their teacher.

WIPEOUT FORM - Students that misbehave may receive a PBIS Wipeout Form from a staff member (teacher, student supervisor, etc.). Behaviors on the Wipeout Form fall into one of two categories: Minor or Major.

MINOR INFRACTIONS - Minor infractions are behaviors such as being disruptive, disrespectful, or misusing school property. Interventions may include a student conference with a staff member or loss of privilege. The parent/guardian may also be contacted by phone or e-mail. All Minor behaviors are monitored by the classroom teacher. The Wipeout form is sent home for the parent/guardian to review, sign, and return. After receiving three Wipeout Forms for Minor incidents during each month of school equals a Major violation on the fourth incident. All students start with a “clean slate” on the first school day of each month.

MAJOR INFRACTIONS - Major infractions are more severe behaviors such as fighting, harassment/bullying, and bringing a dangerous object to school. Interventions include a student conference with a school administrator (principal, AP, or ETAP) and the parent/guardian is contacted by a school administrator. There may also be a loss of privilege and the student may have an in/out of school suspension. The Wipeout form is sent home for the parent/guardian to review, sign, and return.

WAVES TO SUCCESS ASSEMBLIES - Principal Curt Visca reviewed the PBIS Waves to Success program with 1st - 5th grade students during assemblies on August 23rd. Preschool and kindergarten teachers will be reviewing the PBIS Waves to Success program with their students in the classrooms.
